Selection of texture-associated biomarkers in chilled and iced grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) fillets via DIA-based proteomics

Consumers care about the texture of fresh fish flesh, but a rapid quantitative analytical method for this has not been properly established. In this study, texture-associated biomarkers were selected by DIA-based proteomics for possible future application. Results indicated a significant decline in texture and moisture characteristics with extended storage under chilled and iced conditions, and flesh quality was categorized into three intervals. A total of 8 texture-associated biomarkers were identified in the chilled storage group, and 3 distinct ones in the iced storage group. Biomarkers were further refined based on their expression levels. Isobutyryl-CoA dehydrogenase, mitochondrial and [Phosphatase 2A protein]-leucine-carboxy methyltransferase were identified as effective texture-associated biomarkers for chilled fish, and Staphylococcal nuclease domain-containing protein 1 for iced fish. This study provided suitable proteins as indicators of fresh fish flesh texture, which could help establish a rapid and convenient texture testing method in future studies.

Ion chromatography‐based determination of lithium in human urine for monitoring medication compliance

AbstractContinuous Li monitoring is vital in ensuring the safety and treatment efficacy of probationers with psychotic disorders, such as bipolar disorder, depression, and mania. This study introduced a validated quantitative analysis method using ion chromatography (IC) to monitor Li+ concentration in urine. The methodology involved centrifuging the urine sample, diluting the supernatant with deionized water, and subsequent IC analysis using guard and analytical columns for precise Li+ concentration measurement. The method quantified Li+ within the range of 2–400 ng/mL, demonstrating its excellent linearity (r2 = 0.9983) with a weighting factor of 1/x. Precision levels below 12.8% were observed for both intraday and interday measurements with an accuracy of −5.9% to 15.2%. The detection limit was identified as 0.12 ng/mL. The method conformed to analytical standards in terms of selectivity, matrix effect, process efficiency, dilution integrity, and stability. Moreover, the method distinctly quantified Li+ while effectively eliminating interference from Na+, which had a similar retention time as Li+ with higher concentrations. Further, the developed method was successfully applied to analyze forensic urine samples of Li users, demonstrating its applicability for medication compliance monitoring using urine samples of mentally disordered probationers.

The Influence of Motivation, Organizational Culture, and Transformational Leadership Style on Performance at Bhaktiasih General Hospital

This study investigates the influence of motivation, organizational culture, and transformational leadership style on performance at Bhaktiasih General Hospital. Utilizing quantitative analysis methods, data was collected from employees through surveys and analyzed using regression analysis. The results revealed significant positive effects of motivation, organizational culture, and transformational leadership style on employee performance with simultaneous test F count (318.779) > F table (2.16), significance of 0.001 less than 0.10 and coefficient of determination of 0.823 or 82.30%. Specifically, higher levels of motivation, a strong organizational culture, and effective implementation of transformational leadership were associated with improved performance outcomes. These findings underscore the importance of fostering a motivational work environment, nurturing a positive organizational culture, and adopting transformational leadership practices to enhance performance in healthcare settings. Understanding these factors can inform management strategies aimed at improving overall performance and quality of care in hospitals like Bhaktiasih General Hospital.

Public Awareness Campaigns and Their Impact on Youth Gambling in Tanzania: A Case Study of Gallapo Ward in Manyara Region

Youth gambling is a growing concern in Tanzania, with significant participation rates among young people. Public awareness campaigns have been identified as a potential strategy to reduce youth gambling behaviors by educating them about the risks associated with gambling and promoting responsible behaviors. This study aimed to assess the impact of public awareness campaigns on reducing youth gambling in Gallapo Ward, Manyara Region, Tanzania.A mixed-methods approach was employed, including both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis methods. A sample size of 75 youth who had participated in gambling activities was selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and in-depth interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS version 26, while qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis.The findings revealed that public awareness campaigns had a significant impact on increasing awareness of legal age restrictions for gambling and improving understanding of gambling risks among youth. The campaigns also helped reduce peer pressure related to gambling and influenced youth to resist negative influences. Moreover, there was a strong belief among respondents that public awareness campaigns could contribute to a decrease in youth gambling rates.Based on the study findings, it is recommended to continue investing in and expanding public awareness campaigns focused on educating youth about responsible gambling practices. Tailored educational programs and support services should be developed to address specific knowledge gaps and behavioral patterns related to gambling among youth. Collaborative efforts involving various stakeholders are crucial for the success of these interventions.Overall, the study emphasizes the importance of public awareness campaigns in promoting responsible gambling behaviors and advocating for policy measures to safeguard youth from the harms of gambling. These findings provide valuable insights for stakeholders and policymakers working towards reducing youth gambling impact in Tanzania.

Integrating Water Management Practices with Modern Irrigation Technologies in Aalo, West Siang District, Arunachal Pradesh

This research addresses the imperative of harmonizing traditional water management practices with contemporary irrigation technologies to ensure sustainable water use in Aalo, West Siang District, Arunachal Pradesh. Given the pressing need to optimize water resources for agricultural pursuits while upholding environmental integrity and socio-economic progress, a multidisciplinary methodology is employed. Aalo faces multifaceted challenges such as water scarcity, erratic rainfall patterns, and escalating agricultural demands. While traditional water management methods have historically upheld agricultural livelihoods, the advent of modern irrigation technologies presents promising avenues for bolstering water efficiency, crop productivity, and sustainable development. Through a mixed-methods approach, including quantitative analysis, qualitative assessments, and participatory research methods, the study endeavors to comprehensively understand water management practices and irrigation technologies in Aalo. Surveys, interviews, and field observations will facilitate the assessment of traditional water management systems' efficacy in mitigating water scarcity and supporting agricultural productivity. Concurrently, the study will evaluate the adoption and impact of modern irrigation technologies on water use efficiency, crop yields, and socio-economic indicators in the region. Anticipated findings are poised to unveil synergies and prospects for integrating traditional wisdom with modern irrigation practices to fortify sustainability and resilience in water management. Utilization of absorbance subtraction and ratio difference green spectrophotometric methods for the quantification of alfuzosin hydrochloride and tadalafil in their binary mixture

Alfuzosin hydrochloride and tadalafil fixed-dose combination tablets were recently formulated for the treatment of individuals with lower urinary tract symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia. Herein, the first spectrophotometric methods for quantitative analysis of alfuzosin hydrochloride and tadalafil in their binary mixture were established. The spectral overlapping of alfuzosin hydrochloride and tadalafil made direct simultaneous analysis unfeasible. Therefore, two mathematical methods were used to solve these overlapping spectra: absorbance subtraction and ratio difference. The absorbance subtraction method manipulates the zero absorption spectra of the studied drugs at the isoabsorptive point (272 nm) and uses the absorbance factor of pure ALF to calculate the absorbance of the studied drugs in the mixture at the isoabsorptive point. The ratio spectra method, on the other hand, manipulates the ratio spectra of the studied drugs, which are obtained by dividing each drug’s zero absorption spectra by a divisor spectrum from the second drug. The ratio amplitude difference between 251 nm and 211 nm was directly proportional to alfuzosin hydrochloride, whereas between 292 nm and 222 nm it was directly proportional to tadalafil. The methods used were verified in accordance with the recommendations of the ICH and demonstrated adequate linear regression in working ranges of 1–15 µg/mL for alfuzosin hydrochloride and 3–40 µg/mL for tadalafil. The methods were accurate, precise, and selectively employed to quantify alfuzosin hydrochloride and tadalafil in their combined tablets.

Accurate method based on data filtering for quantitative multi-element analysis of soils using CF-LIBS

To obtain more stable spectral data for accurate quantitative analysis of multi-element, especially for the large-area in-situ elements detection of soils, we propose a method for a multi-element quantitative analysis of soils using calibration-free laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (CF-LIBS) based on data filtering. In this study, we analyze a standard soil sample doped with two heavy metal elements, Cu and Cd, with a specific focus on the line of Cu I 324.75 nm for filtering the experimental data of multiple sample sets. Pre- and post- data filtering, the relative standard deviation for Cu decreased from 30% to 10%, The limits of detection (LOD) values for Cu and Cd decreased by 5% and 4%, respectively. Through CF-LIBS, a quantitative analysis was conducted to determine the relative content of elements in soils. Using Cu as a reference, the concentration of Cd was accurately calculated. The results show that post- data filtering, the average relative error of the Cd decreases from 11% to 5%, indicating the effectiveness of data filtering in improving the accuracy of quantitative analysis. Moreover, the content of Si, Fe and other elements can be accurately calculated using this method. To further correct the calculation, the results for Cd was used to provide a more precise calculation. This approach is of great importance for the large-area in-situ heavy metals and trace elements detection in soil, as well as for rapid and accurate quantitative analysis.

Navigating governance with sticks, carrots, and sermons: Paving paths for sustainable development goals through local spatial planning

AbstractThe 2030 Agenda underscores the vital role of local authorities and civil society in implementing sustainable development goals (SDGs). Aligning with this agenda, the EU's spatial development framework imparts normative values, emphasizing sustainable territorial development, participatory governance, and multi‐level cooperation. This framework serves as a potential facilitator for spatial planning to ensure policy coherence in SDG implementation. Despite its potential, mainstreaming the 2030 Agenda through spatial planning encounters challenges, particularly navigating unresolved tensions between global SDG formulation and local ownership. These challenges are accentuated in countries with conformative planning systems and weak governance structures, requiring a specific methodological approach. To address these complexities, this study investigates the opportunities for leveraging SDGs within the multi‐level governance arena of spatial planning. Employing mixed quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods in a local planning context, the research explores key concerns arising from regional, national, and EU spatial development policies. The study delves into their potential leverage capacity for guiding and funding SDGs within a specific local context. Results suggest that using different policy mechanisms, spatial planning can better address the holistic nature of the 2030 Agenda. Although not all SDGs can be leveraged, a substantial part can be addressed whenever a broader multi‐level governance perspective is considered within local planning contexts.

Remittance Dynamics: Unraveling Socio-Economic Impact on Households in Pokhara

This research aims to evaluate the socio-economic implications of remittances on households in Pokhara Valley, Nepal by employing a positivist approach, empirical observation, quantitative analysis, and statistical methods through comparative research design and utilizes statistical tools such as chi-square tests and independent samples t-tests. Quantitative data are collected through structured questionnaires, enabling numerical insights into spending patterns, human capital investments, and agricultural involvement for hypothesis testing. From the findings of this study households receiving remittances demonstrate higher investments in health and education, positively impacting their socio-economic status. However, migration for remittances has led to a decreased labour supply, negatively affecting agricultural involvement. The research concludes by emphasizing the need for further comprehensive research to elucidate the broader socio-economic consequences of remittances on households at the national level. The study holds implications for policymakers, urging measures to encourage remittance investments in domestic development. It recommends addressing import trends and balancing payment deficits by leveraging remittance funds. Additionally, the research suggests for initiatives supporting agricultural production, small industries, and market development to utilize remittance funds for broader economic growth.

The Development of Business Based on Sharia to Achieve Common Profit and Community Welfare at Islamic Boarding School Azkal Azkia Liddarain NW

The objective of this research is: 1) To explore the implementation process of business based on syaria development at Islamic Boarding School Azkal Azkia Liddarain NW; 2) To analyze the impact of the business based on syaria model on the community welfare around Islamic Boarding School Azkal Azkia Liddarain NW; and 3) To assess the contribution of business based on syaria to economic profit and social development at Islamic Boarding School Azkal Azkia Liddarain NW. The research method used a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative aspects. Through this mixed-methods approach, several data collection techniques were applied, including Interviews, Surveys, Case Studies, Financial Analysis, Focus Group Discussions (FGD), and Document Content Analysis. Data analysis techniques involved an integrated approach that combined qualitative and quantitative analysis methods. 1) Qualitative Analysis, including: a) Interviews, b) Focus Group Discussions, and c) Document Content Analysis. 2) Quantitative Analysis, including: a) Surveys, and b) Financial Analysis. 3) Integration and Conclusion Drawing, including: a) Comparing Qualitative and Quantitative Data, and b) Drawing Conclusions and Recommendations. The results show that 1) The process of developing business based on syaria at Islamic Boarding School Azkal Azkia Liddarain NW has successfully achieved common profit between the pesantren and the community. The implementation of business based on syaria business based on syaria mechanisms, support from economic and social factors, and the positive impact on community welfare are integral components in achieving sustainable business goals; 2) The implementation of the business based on syaria model at Islamic Boarding School Azkal Azkia Liddarain NW has a positive impact on the welfare of the surrounding community. In addition to improving the economic aspect, this business model also plays a role in empowering the economy and social development of the community. This conclusion indicates that business based on syaria can be an effective instrument in enhancing holistic community welfare; and 3) Business based on syaria at Islamic Boarding School Azkal Azkia Liddarain NW makes a positive contribution to the improvement of economic profit and social development in the surrounding community. The application of Sharia principles in business activities brings broader positive impacts, creating an inclusive and sustainable environment for the Islamic boarding schools and the local community. This conclusion emphasizes the importance of business based on syaria in empowering the economy and promoting social development at the local level.

Analysis of cooling loads and air circulation in the passenger compartment of the CR400AF fast train trailer car

The air conditioning system is a system that regulates air circulation and air temperature on the train. The temperature standard for fast train passengers is in accordance with Permen No. 7th year 2022 is 22°C - 26°C. To achieve this temperature, a cooling system is needed that is suitable for the cooling load. This research was conducted on the CR400AF fast train trailer car with the aim of knowing the factors that influence cooling loads, calculating and analyzing cooling loads which are used as a reference in determining air conditioning technical specifications, as well as analyzing air circulation that affects air humidity. The data analysis method used is the quantitative data analysis method. This method is carried out by collecting primary and secondary data to be used as a basis for calculations in answering the problem formulation. Data analysis was carried out by calculating the OTTV (Overall Thermal Transfer Value) according to SNI 03-6389-2000, calculating the cooling load using the CLTD (Cooling Load Temperature Difference) method according to SNI 03-6572-2001, and carrying out an air circulation test referring to Permen No. . 7 of 2022. From the results of the analysis and calculations, the OTTV value is 15.6 Watt/m2. Room eligibility standards according to SNI 03-6389-2000 standards are OTTV values not greater than 45 Watt/m2. The internal cooling load is 15,010 W, the external load and ventilation is 22,688.92 W, the total cooling load is added 10% safety factor of 41.47 kW, the cooling capacity of the AC unit based on technical specifications is 45kW. The average value of air flow velocity during the air circulation test is 0.3 m/s. according to Ministerial Regulation No. 7 of 2022 maximum air circulation speed of 0.5 m/s. From several analysis and calculation results, it can be concluded that the passenger space of the CR400AF fast train trailer car is standard and feasible to operate

Chemical Relationship among Genetically Authenticated Medicinal Species of Genus Angelica.

The genus Angelica comprises various species utilized for diverse medicinal purposes, with differences attributed to the varying levels or types of inherent chemical components in each species. This study employed DNA barcode analysis and HPLC analysis to genetically authenticate and chemically classify eight medicinal Angelica species (n = 106) as well as two non-medicinal species (n = 14) that have been misused. Nucleotide sequence analysis of the nuclear internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region revealed differences ranging from 11 to 117 bp, while psbA-trnH showed variances of 3 to 95 bp, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis grouped all samples except Angelica sinensis into the same cluster, with some counterfeits forming separate clusters. Verification using the NCBI database confirmed the feasibility of species identification. For chemical identification, a robust quantitative HPLC analysis method was developed for 46 marker compounds. Subsequently, two A. reflexa-specific and seven A. biserrata-specific marker compounds were identified, alongside non-specific markers. Moreover, chemometric clustering analysis reflecting differences in chemical content between species revealed that most samples formed distinct clusters according to the plant species. However, some samples formed mixed clusters containing different species. These findings offer crucial insights for the standardization and quality control of medicinal Angelica species.

Development and validation of a method for simultaneous quantitative determination of albendazole and praziquantel in coated tablets “AP-helmin”

Adapting modern methods of quantitative analysis of active substances in their joint content in the dosage form and validating them is an integral process of pharmaceutical development. We have developed a drug in the form of coated tablets for the treatment of helminthiases of the digestive system in adults. A feature of this drug is the composition of the API of albendazole and praziquantel in a ratio of 1:4. The aim of this research is to develop methodology for quantitative analysis of both substances by the method of liquid chromatography, determination of their possible mutual influence on the process, as well as validation of the proposed methods. Materials and methods. To meet the research's set purpose, the following tasks were identified: choosing the most rational method for the quantitative determination of albendazole and praziquantel; confirming the absence of the mutual influence of APIs on the results obtained; and validating the selected methods of albendazole and praziquantel analysis. Object of the research conducted included coated tablets “AP-helmin”, series 1-5.2021; pharmacopoeial standard sample (PSS) of albendazole, and PSS praziquantel. Quantitative determination of albendazole and praziquantel was conducted according to SPU, method 2.2.29. Results. The article describes the conditions and stages of the quantitative determination of albendazole and praziquantel and the main indicators of method validation. Conclusions. It was proven that quantification with the liquid chromatography method of both substances is validated, and the substances do not affect each other's analysis in the coated tablets "AP-helmin" following the project of QCM for this drug. All calculated parameters meet the required validation criteria

Smart cities in developing countries: a review of research literature

ABSTRACT This paper departs from the need to better understand the intellectual map of smart city research in the context of developing countries which tends to be overlooked within the current smart city literature. A more refined landscape of smart city literature has been therefore carried out by using bibliometric analysis, i.e. a quantitative analysis method to measure and map the current body of knowledge in a scientific discipline, based on academic articles indexed in the Scopus database. In this paper, we employ a provincializing smart urbanism stance, particularly by looking through the lenses of socio-technical system and (variegated) development paths to arrive at a more nuanced understanding of smart cities. First, by looking at the research trends, geographical origins of knowledge production, research themes, and the overall intellectual structure of smart city research we unpack the similarities and differences between the general and developing countries categories. Second, reflecting upon these findings, we provide a more contextualized view of smart city research in developing countries and propose a number of research areas that have so far been overlooked. Given some peculiarities in the intellectual landscape of the smart city in developing countries due to different socio-technical contextual conditions, we suggest the need to attune the smart city label to national and local specifics so that it can aptly address real and multiplex urban challenges.

Qualitative and quantitative analysis methods for quality control of rhubarb in Taiwan’s markets

Introduction: Rhubarb is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) used to release heat and has cathartic effects. Official rhubarb in Taiwan Herbal Pharmacopeias 4th edition (THP 4th) and China Pharmacopeia 2020 (CP 2020) are the roots and rhizomes of Rheum palmatum L., Rheum tanguticum Maxim. ex Balf., and Rheum officinale Baill. However, the Rheum genus is a large genus with many different species, and owing to the similarity in appearance and taste with official rhubarb, there needs to be more clarity in the distinction between the species of rhubarb and their applications. Given the time-consuming and complicated extraction and chromatography methods outlined in pharmacopeias, we improved the qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis methods for rhubarb in the market. Hence, we applied our method to identify the species and quality of official and unofficial rhubarb.Method: We analyzed 21 rhubarb samples from the Taiwanese market using a proposed HPLC-based extraction and qualitative analysis employing eight markers: aloe-emodin, rhein, emodin, chrysophanol, physcion, rhapontigenin, rhaponticin, and resveratrol. Additionally, we developed a TLC method for the analysis of rhubarb. KEGG pathway analysis was used to clarify the phytochemical and pharmacological knowledge of official and unofficial rhubarb.Results: Rhein and rhapontigenin emerged as key markers to differentiate official and unofficial rhubarb. Rhapontigenin is abundant in unofficial rhubarb; however, rhein content was low. In contrast, their contents in official rhubarb were opposite to their contents in unofficial rhubarb. The TLC analysis used rhein and rhapontigenin to identify rhubarb in Taiwan’s markets, whereas the KEGG pathway analysis revealed that anthraquinones and stilbenes affected different pathways.Discussion: Eight reference standards were used in this study to propose a quality control method for rhubarb in Taiwanese markets. We propose a rapid extraction method and quantitative analysis of rhubarb to differentiate between official and unofficial rhubarb.

Analysis of Fishermen's Income in The Seribu Archipelago

This region of Indonesia has great potential for national development and is aimed at increasing economic growth for the better. The low welfare of fishermen, especially traditional fishermen, is a problem that hinders the development of fisheries zones. The purpose of this article is to describe the partial and simultaneous influence of capital, technology, fishing time and fishing experience on fishermen's income in the Seribu Islands. This research is quantitative research with multiple linear regression quantitative descriptive data analysis methods. The analysis results show that the variables capital and time at sea have a significant effect on fishermen's income in the Seribu Islands, while the fishing experience variable does not have a significant effect on the income of fishermen in the Seribu Islands. Then capital, technology, time at sea and sea experience simultaneously have a significant effect on the income of fishermen in the Seribu Islands. Based on research findings it is hoped that fishermen can increase their capital by extending their fishing time and traveling further to optimize their results. It is hoped that the Seribu Islands Government can contribute to policy-making and provide more attention to fishermen by providing support, guidance, and guidance on how to increase fishing.

This research aims to analyze the financial performance of the Sambas Regency Regional Government for 5 years from 2017 to 2021 and test whether there are differences in the performance of the degree of decentralization, performance of regional financial independence, performance of operating expenditures, and performance of capital expenditures. The analytical tools used are financial ratios, namely liquidity ratios, leverage ratios, debt ratios, productivity ratios and operating ratios. The research uses quantitative descriptive data analysis methods. The research results show that the liquidity ratio which consists of the average current ratio is 0.82, meaning that every Rp. 1,- of current debt is guaranteed by Rp. 0.82,- of current assets; The average cash ratio is 0.35, meaning that for every Rp. 1,- of current assets, Rp. 0.35 is cash and cash equivalents; the average cash to current liabilities is 0.29, meaning the regional government's ability to immediately pay every Rp. 1.- of current debt using cash and cash equivalents is Rp. 0.29,-; The average Quick Ratio is 0.60, meaning that the local government's ability to fulfill its short-term obligations for every Rp. 1,- using cash, cash equivalents and receivables is Rp. 0.60,-; The average cash flow ratio is 2.31, meaning the ability of a Regional Government's operating cash flow to pay for every Rp. 1,- of current debt owned using operating cash of Rp. 2.31,-. The leverage ratio measured is the Short Term Debt to Long Term Debt Ratio of 1.00. The debt ratio measured is the Total Liabilities to Current Assets Ratio. The average is 1.24 and the average Current Liabilities to Total Asset Ratio is 0.05, meaning that for every R.1,- debt is guaranteed by total assets of Rp.0.05,- The productivity ratio measured is Current Assets to Total Assets Ratio . The average is 0.04, meaning that for every Rp. 1,- current assets used for operational activities is Rp. 0.04,- Quick Asset to Inventory Ratio, the average is 2.67. The operating ratios measured include the average Earning Power of Total Investment of 0.10. The average financial independence ratio is 0.11 or 11%. From the aspect of relationship patterns and level of capability, the region is in the very low category with an instructive relationship pattern. The Public Participation Level Ratio is 0.07. This ratio shows the level of public participation in paying taxes, in this case all regional tax revenues, tax revenue sharing, both central and provincial. The higher the ratio value of the level of public participation of a Regional Government, the better it will be. From the calculation results it can be seen that for every Rp. 1,- Revenue, which comes from taxes is Rp. 0.07,- Debt Service Coverage Ratio (DSCR) for the Regional Government of Sambas Regency, the average for 2017-2021 is 2.79 or still above the minimum requirement of 2.5 as regulated in PP No. 107 of 2000 concerning Regional Loans article 6 letter b. However, in 2020 the DSCR was 2.35 and in 2021 it was 1.79, which is below the minimum requirements as regulated in PP 107/2000. This condition is caused by the relatively increasing number of regional loans from year to year. Macro-based collagen quantification and segmentation in picrosirius red-stained heart sections using light microscopy

Abstract Context Picrosirius Red (PSR) staining constitutes an important and broadly used tool to visualize collagen and fibrosis in various tissues. Although multiple qualitative and quantitative analysis methods to evaluate fibrosis are available, many require specialized devices and software or lack objectivity and scalability. Objective Here, we aimed to develop a versatile and powerful “QuantSeg” macro in the FIJI image processing software capable of automated, robust, and quick collagen quantification in cardiac tissue from light micrographs. To examine different patterns of fibrosis, an optional segmentation algorithm was implemented. Design To ensure the method’s validity, we quantified the collagen content in a set of wild-type versus plakoglobin-knockout murine hearts exhibiting extensive fibrosis using both the macro as well as an established, fluorescence microscopy-based method, and compared results. To demonstrate the capabilities of the segmentation feature, rat hearts were examined post myocardial infarction. Results We found the QuantSeg macro to robustly detect the differences in fibrosis between knockout and control hearts. In sections with low collagen content, the macro yielded more consistent results than using the fluorescence microscopy-based technique. Conclusions With its wide range of output parameters, ease of use, cost effectiveness, and objectivity, the QuantSeg macro has the potential to become an established method for analysis of PSR-stained tissue. The novel segmentation feature allows for automated evaluation of different patterns of cardiac fibrosis for the first time.

Analysis of the Impact of Carbon Tariffs on China's Trade

As the impact of the financial crisis deepened, on March 17, 2009, US Energy Secretary Steven Chu prepared to impose carbon tariffs on imported goods to avoid unfair competition in the US manufacturing industry. Meanwhile, in recent years, some developed countries or regions, such as the United States and the European Union, have proposed punitive tariffs on imported products from developing countries such as China and India based on carbon content under the pretext of addressing climate change. This measure has sparked widespread international discussion. Therefore, this article takes carbon tariffs as the research object and analyzes the impact of China's carbon emissions on its export trade and the impact of international emission reduction regulations and measures on China's export trade through qualitative and quantitative analysis methods. The paper is divided into 7 chapters. Chapters 1, 2, and 3 provide explanations on the relevant concepts and development trends of carbon tariffs. Carbon tariffs are essentially border tax regulatory measures with trade protectionism attributes. Chapters 4 and 5 analyze the impact of carbon tariff policies. Chapters 6 and 7 propose corresponding strategies and suggestions based on the previous analysis.

The visual representation of Ukrainian and Afghan refugees in the Spanish press

The public’s understanding of the situation of refugees largely depends on how they are represented by the media. This article analyses this representation by studying photographs that appear in four mainstream Spanish newspapers of varied political orientation, comparing two paradigmatic examples: that of Afghan refugees versus Ukrainian refugees. The objective of this analysis is to determine the differences and similarities between how each case is covered, using a mixed quantitative and qualitative content analysis method to determine the images’ denotative and connotative aspects, based on ‘framing theory’. Findings show that, although all the refugees are presented primarily from a human-interest angle, there is a significant degree of depersonalization in their photographic presentation due to the framing and stylistic elements employed. Also, Afghans are viewed with greater suspicion than Ukrainians, with a quarter of their images being associated with the idea of conflict.
